CHAPTER 15

“What…” I trailed off, still staring at the corner Scath had disappeared around. I turned to look at Peasblossom through the window. “What just happened?”

The pixie’s face crinkled with worry, and her multi-faceted pink eyes wouldn’t meet mine. “She looked sad.”

I waited, but she didn’t say anything more, and she was still blocking our link. I warred with myself over whether to push the matter. Peasblossom obviously knew more than she was saying, and it wasn’t characteristic of the tiny fey to hold back when she had information. Or an opinion.

The fact that she wasn’t telling me more told me one thing for certain.

This had to do with the Unspeakable.

I took a deep breath and circled around the car to get back inside.

As soon as I closed the door, Peasblossom cleared her throat. “Are you going to go after her?”

“No,” I said, staring harder than necessary at the key as I slid it into the ignition. “No, I think I’ll give her some space first. Whatever’s wrong, she obviously doesn’t want to talk about it right now.”

I put Jamie’s address in the GPS.

“Are we going to talk to her neighbors?” Peasblossom asked.

“Yes. Also, we’re going to look around her apartment for the fire opal that was missing from Megan’s altar.”

“You think one of the new coven members stole Megan’s magic so they’d be powerful enough to join the new coven,” Peasblossom guessed.

“I don’t think they stole her magic,” I corrected her. “Eating her heart and brain wouldn’t have done it, especially not if there was no ritual involved. But whoever killed her might have done so intending to steal her magic. None of those three had much power, just some latent ability, so it doesn’t seem like any of them stole magic so much as they have the same amount of magic they had before, they were just chosen on the second draft. But the fire opal is missing, and it’s possible whoever killed her stole it as a plan B when eating her heart and brain didn’t work.”

I paused, glancing to the side where Peasblossom was perched on the ledge of the passenger window. She was staring into every alleyway we passed, every shadow.

Looking for Scath.

“Peasblossom,” I said quietly. “Do you know why Scath is upset?”

“I think so. But it’s up to her to tell you,” she added sadly.

I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel. “It obviously has something to do with stealing magic.”

Peasblossom’s wings stilled.

“Do you think Scath believes I see her as a monster because her bite drains a person’s energy?”

Peasblossom didn’t turn around.

“Because draining someone’s energy isn’t the same thing as stealing their magic,” I pointed out.

“I think we should find Scath,” Peasblossom said softly. “She’s hurting.”

My chest tightened. “I know. And I hate that she’s in pain and she doesn’t feel like she can talk to me about it. But it’s obvious that right now, she needs some space. And if there is something about this case that’s bothering her, maybe it would be better to solve it and then track her down.
